چکیده

The Development Plan of Taranto port (S. Italy) predicts the dredging of approx.20 Mt sediments, ≥10% of which are polluted. By appointment of Italian Environment Ministry, a detailed experimental investigation was carried out at laboratory and pilot-scale levels on the best available techniques to reclaim the polluted sediment so to reuse it in a technic and cost effective manner. A short pre-activation of sediment by mechanochemical technique followed by aerobic biodegradation offered most effective decontamination while the addition of cement with blast-furnace slag and coal fly ash allowed profitable reuse of the de(un)contaminated sediments. Keywords—marine sediments; port pollution; PAHs; hydraulic additives; coal fly ash, waste reclamation and reuse.

Isolation of anthracene resistant positive gram bacteria from Imam Khomeini Port oil polluted sediments

Today's most of microorganisms are used for purification of hazard waste such as municipal and industrial waste water and oil contaminants. In this study 2 bacterial species were isolated and purified in hydrocarbon (anthracene) containing media from oil polluted sediment of Imam Khomeini port. Bacillus pasteurii and Amphibacillus xylanus species were identified as indicator degrading bacteria ...

Bioremediation of oil polluted marine sediments: A bio-engineering treatment.

The fate of hydrocarbon pollutants and the development of oil-degrading indigenous marine bacteria in contaminated sediments are strongly influenced by abiotic factors such as temperature, low oxygen levels, and nutrient availability. In this work, the effects of different biodegradation processes (bioremediation) on oil-polluted anoxic sediments were analyzed. In particular, as a potential bio...

A new bioindicator, shell of Trachycardium lacunosum, and sediment samples to monitors metals (Al, Zn, Fe, Mn, Ni, V, Co, Cr and Cu) in marine environment: The Persian Gulf as a case

BACKGROUND The present work was designed to detect heavy metal contents of Al, Zn, Fe, Mn, Ni, V, Co, Cr and Cu in sediments and shells of the Trachycardium lacunosum collected in polluted and unpolluted areas along the Persian Gulf. METHODS The samples were taken from surface sediments (0-10 cm) and shells of Trachycardium lacunosum in two separated areas (polluted and unpolluted) in norther...

Influence of bioturbation by the polychaete Nereis diversicolor on the structure of bacterial communities in oil contaminated coastal sediments.

Patterns of change in the structure of bacterial communities monitored by ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (RISA) in oil contaminated sediments inhabited or not by the marine polychaete Nereis diversicolor were studied during 45 days under laboratory conditions. Results supported by principal component analysis showed a marked response of the bacterial communities to the oil contamination a...

Chlorophyll-deficient propagules of Avicennia marina and apparent longer term deterioration of mangrove fitness in oil-polluted sediments.

A correlation between petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations in sediments and chlorophyll-deficient mutations in mangroves may occur also in Australian mangroves. Earlier reports of such mutations in the Caribbean area were evident in viviparous propagules of the common mangrove genera, Rhizophora, borne on otherwise normal trees. These mutant propagules were termed albinos' since they lacked chl...
